Whether through paint, photographs, video, or other materiality, Steve Woodbury’s work explores the nature of perception and meaning – where we come from and where we go. His work has been exhibited in over 25 individual exhibitions and numerous group shows over almost twenty years and consequently can be found in public
and private collections throughout Asia, Europe, the USA, New Zealand and Australia.
Gaining his BFA with Honours combined with his training in sport, pain recovery and experience with Zen to allow a trajectory of intense interest in
conscious and unconscious processing. Life and death, growth and renewal, Ancient and contemporary create a tension within the work as his linguistic explorations are explored through the open, abstracted, calligraphic mark that alludes to the essence of his many subjects.
Although many hours are spent drawing from scenes and life, when the time comes to paint it is the process of simplifying the subject to its essence that motivates him. Like coloured Rorschach tests, these works open the experience of viewing and interpreting for the viewer’s own associations. Incorporating, distilling and coalescing disparate subjects from landscape, light, along with language and text from sources across philosophy, the Sagas and his own poetry, create open liminal objects that are designed to slow the mind in a world of increasing overload.
The aim is to involve your unconscious emotive responses without thinking about it consciously. Look, feel and enjoy.
