In the world of art, I am what is known as a late-bloomer.
While I have always loved art and have dabbled since childhood, the box of oil paints I was given in my youth remained unopened for over 30 years while life flew by. As my children grew up and my career as a nurse began to take up less of my time, I took those oil paints out of their box. Painting is now the creative core to my life. I paint every opportunity I can.
My painting is guided by a desire to reflect and capture the beauty in the world. Since I began to paint seriously, over a decade ago, my interests have ranged widely. I love the challenge of painting people, their personality and character; landscapes and nature in all its permeations; interesting objects and treasured possessions.
For me painting is also about something more than merely making something beautiful; it is about the creation of emotion. With a still life that emotion may be a feeling of calmness and quiet reflection, while with a portrait it might be about recalling joyful times with a loved one.
Ultimately, my painting is driven by my desire to reflect, and give external expression to the richness of our internal lives.
I sell and exhibit paintings in art shows around Tasmania. I am honoured that my work has recently gained recognition, winning the People’s Choice award for painting in Kingborough, Hobart Rotary and Channel Regional Arts Group.
